Medical Plastics News  published an article recently that focuses on SUD reprocessing, its benefits and the process for validations for reprocessed medical devices. The article found that “reusing devices that have been safely reprocessed by a third-party reprocessor can enable healthcare providers to maintain high-quality patient care while saving cost and reducing medical waste”.  Authored by Nelson Labs‘ Emily Mitzel and Paul Littley, the article identifies a number of considerations and steps required to successfully reprocess SUDs, such as organizing devices for validation according to family grouping, cleaning, disinfection and sterilization, assessing water system(s) design and management, and ensuring regulatory compliance .  Noting a high demand for third-party reprocessing of single-use devices  to provide safe and effective care that is also economical—ultimately benefiting the patient – the article concludes that paramount to these efforts are validated cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization processes.
