Waste Management & Research, official Journal of the International Solid Waste Association, includes a peer-reviewed article this last month on Greening the OR.  Written about Australia, the article notes that Australia is not yet reprocessing or remanufacturing its single-use devices which the article recognizes is happening in other advanced nations.
The article reviewed the literature for initiatives on greening the OR in Australia and internationally.  The article notes single-use device reprocessing of surgical equipment and indicates that many hospitals in the “US already subject single-use operating theatre devices to reprocessing.”  However, unfortunately, Australian regulations are described as against the law.
AMDR sees this as an opportunity.  Worldwide, governments are adopting regulatory paradigms that treat SUD reuse as a manufacturing activity.  Australian regulations seem to be in line with this – so what will it take to speed up the availability of remanufactured SUDs for Australia?
