Check out the April 8 Beyond Clean podcast featuring Peter Nichol on the $50 billion dollar savings opportunity that exists by investing in Sterile Processing departments.  Dr. Nichol’s discusses his research facing sterile processing departments focused on waste.  He estimates, in the US alone, there are billions of dollars in savings opportunities.  In the podcast, Dr. Nichols discusses proper investment in staffing for central sterile departments staff as a tool to reduce the immense amount of waste in healthcare.  Like proper management and reprocessing of reusable medical devices, central sterile professionals who maximize their single use device (SUDs) reprocessing can save their facilities hundreds of thousands — to millions of dollars a year – funds that can be reinvested in staff, training, or new technology and equipment – all to benefit patient care.  Spent SUDs are not waste but valuable assets that can be reprocessed.  Indeed, there is waste and AMDR appreciates the good work Beyond Clean and Dr. Nichols are doing to highlight attention to these issues.
