AMDR Issues Common Metrics and Terminology Reporting Standard to Help Customers Measure Success of Reprocessing Programs

AMDR members that meet these reporting standards are encouraged to use this seal.
Health systems partner with AMDR member reprocessors to reduce costs, waste, and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from their supply chains. But when different reprocessors use different metrics or terms to report their impacts, customers may struggle to compare them.
That’s why AMDR members have agreed to use a Common Metrics and Terminology Reporting Standard.
Beginning immediately, AMDR members will begin using certain common or standardized reporting metrics and terminology when informing health systems about the benefits of using reprocessed devices.
The metrics and terminology that AMDR members will report include:
| Estimated Cost Savings | The difference between the reprocessed sales price and the Average Sales Price (ASP) OR actual costs paid by the facility, if reported to the reprocessor, multiplied by the number of reprocessed devices purchased. |
| Emissions Reduction | Uses AMDR’s CO2 emissions calculator by Product Category to estimate emissions reduction based on number of Reprocessed devices used. |
| Product Category (e.g., Cardiology, Patient Care, Surgical) |
The product category allows for product data to be aggregated to determine greenhouse gas emissions using AMDR’s CO2 emissions calculator.
|
| Collections | The number of devices collected from the healthcare facility. |
| Ineligible Devices | Number of collected devices that were deemed by the AMDR member reprocessor to be ineligible for reprocessing (includes reaching the end of life, being overly soiled/broken, or not passing quality control/functionality). Members may have referred to this as scrap rate, reject rate, discard rate; to be consistent use “Ineligible Devices.” |
| Devices Successfully Reprocessed | Devices collected minus devices that couldn’t be reprocessed. |
| Buyback Rate | Reprocessed purchased devices divided by number of devices successfully reprocessed or available for buy back. |
| Waste Diversion | Total weight of all devices diverted from landfill, calculated by multiplying the number of reprocessed devices collected by their individual weights.
Note: previously, some AMDR members were reporting weight of only devices that are reprocessed. Reporting weight of all collected devices includes our member benefit of managing end of life solutions. |
| Waste Diversion Cost Savings | Collection rate multiplied by the Practice Greenhealth established average price per pound for red bag waste of $0.643/pound. |
AMDR members may, of course, provide additional measures beyond these, but have agreed to the common metrics and terms outlined above to be consistent for our hospital partners.
“We created standard metrics to help customers measure apples-to-apples in the event that they are considering partnering with more than one AMDR member reprocessor,” said Daniel J. Vukelich, President and CEO, AMDR.
“We appreciate input from our members—as well as Becka DeSmidt and the CHARME initiative which evaluated the need for this project and partnered with us to bring it to life.”
