In an effort to cut operating costs and appeal to consumers, many devicemakers are greening up their manufacturing operations. Their environmentally friendly initiatives include recycling plastic, converting to more efficient energy sources, and reducing water usage and wastewater generation, Chad Vincent, a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers’ Lean to Green Sustainability Tech Group, said. The shift has been happening for years, spurred by retailers who sell devices directly to consumers, as well as hospitals and investors, who are demanding more environmentally friendly products.
